Como todos sois conocedores, esta temporada hemos tenido la inmensa suerte de contar en nuestro club, no sólo con la inestimable aportación al juego del equipo de Primera Nacional de “Blake”, sino con el apoyo y ayuda de “Claude Terry”, ex-jugador de los Atlanta Hawks, que tanto en los banquillos durante los partidos, como en los entrenamientos de varios equipos del CP Peñarroya, ha sabido dejar impronta en todos aquellos con los que ha tratado. “Gracias por haber compartido vuestro saber con nosotros”.

Dear Amado and Ramon,
I regret that it has taken so long to send this letter to you. I have been trying to organize my thoughts and form words to adequately thank you for the invitation and opportunity you gave my wife and me to come live in your beautiful community and assist in the basketball development of the CP Penarroya team. Another possible reason for the delay is that due to the suddenness of the pandemic and the corresponding consequences, I had been hoping that life would get back to normal as quickly as this crisis came upon us.
Queridos Amado y Ramón,
Lamento que haya tardado tanto en enviarles esta carta. He querido organizar mis pensamientos y formar palabras para agradecerles adecuadamente por la invitación y oportunidad que nos dio a mi esposa y a mí para venir a vivir en su hermosa comunidad y ayudar en el desarrollo de baloncesto del equipo de CP Penarroya. Otra posible razón del retraso es que, debido a lo repentino de la pandemia y a las consecuencias correspondientes, esperaba que la vida volviera a la normalidad tan pronto como esta crisis se nos apoderó.
As I told the team members in another correspondence, I was looking “forward to being in the playoffs, winning the championship and having another pizza celebration at our house!” This may be for another time, but now is the time to communicate to you our heart-felt gratitude.
Como les dije a los miembros del equipo en otra correspondencia, estaba deseando “estar en los playoffs, ganar el campeonato y tener otra celebración de pizza en nuestra casa!” Esto puede ser para otro momento, pero ahora es el momento de comunicaros nuestra gratitud sincera.
We made it back to our home here in Phoenix, Arizona. We just completed our 14-day quarantine, but we are still following the “stay-at-home” orders of the government. We only go out to buy groceries. But we feel great and have the pleasure to be near our family. Blake continues to work out every day. His dad has a court in the backyard, and they have devised quite a system of physical training. He will certainly be ready if the season is resumed!
Llegamos a nuestra casa aquí en Phoenix, Arizona. Acabamos nuestra cuarentena de 14 días, pero seguimos las órdenes de “quedarse en casa” del gobierno. Sólo salimos a comprar comestibles. Pero nos sentimos bien y tenemos el placer de estar cerca de nuestra familia. Blake sigue con su ejercicio todos los días. Su padre tiene una pista en el patio trasero, y han planificado un buen sistema de entrenamiento físico. ¡Sin duda estará listo si se reanuda la temporada!
First, I want you to know how blessed we were to be invited to be part of the Basketball Club in Penarroya. To have the chance to continue to use my love for teaching and my expertise in the game of basketball was an experience that is unforgettable. Ramon and Amado, you both were so hospitable, so caring and so supportive! Thank you for everything you did for us—the securing of the home, the help in finding transportation and accepting us into the family!
Primero, quiero que sepáis lo bendecidos que fuimos para ser invitados a ser parte del Club de Baloncesto en Penarroya. Tener la oportunidad de seguir usando mi amor por la enseñanza y mi experiencia en el juego del baloncesto fue una experiencia que ha sido inolvidable. Ramón y Amado, ambos érais tan hospitalarios, tan cariñosos y tan solidarios! Gracias por todo lo que hicisteis por nosotros, ¡encontrar un hogar, la ayuda para encontrar transporte y la acogida en la familia!
Secondly, it was such joy to work with the players and coaches. Each player was so responsive and so accepting of instruction and had a great desire to improve. Again, it was very encouraging to me to see the skill development of each player over the six months and how this improvement was transferred to the team. I hope that you also were able to see the growth of the individual team members and the team.
En segundo lugar, fue una alegría trabajar con los jugadores y entrenadores. Cada jugador era tan receptivo y tan dispuesto a aceptar la instrucción y tenía un gran deseo de mejorar. Una vez más, fue muy alentador para mí ver el desarrollo de habilidades de cada jugador durante los seis meses y cómo esta mejora fue transferida al equipo. Espero que también haya podido ver el crecimiento de los miembros individuales del equipo y del equipo.
The coach, Juanra, and I had a wonderful relationship also. I appreciated his attitude regarding learning. He was always asking what I think, what “we” should do, how “we” could do something different. He gave me freedom to do needed things in practice, listened about strategic decisions during games and made me feel a vital part of the team.
El entrenador, Juanra, y yo también tuvimos una relación maravillosa. Aprecié su actitud con respecto al aprendizaje. Siempre preguntaba qué pienso, qué “debemos” hacer, cómo “nosotros” podríamos hacer algo diferente. Me dio libertad para hacer cosas necesarias en la práctica, escuchó sobre las decisiones estratégicas durante los juegos y me hizo sentir una parte vital del equipo.
My only regret was that my language limitations prohibited me from more thoroughly being helpful in both the players’ training and the coach’s development. I am in the process of putting together a letter personally to Juanra which outlines some of the important principles about coaching that can be helpful in his growth as an aspiring and successful coach. I hope I can continue to mentor and provide feedback in the years ahead.
Lo único que lamento fue que las limitaciones de idioma me prohibieran ser más útil tanto en el entrenamiento de los jugadores como en el desarrollo del entrenador. Estoy en el proceso de escribir una carta personal a Juanra que describe algunos de los principios importantes sobre el coaching que pueden ser útiles en su crecimiento como un entrenador aspirante y exitoso. Espero poder seguir siendo un mentor para proporcionar comentarios en los próximos años.
Thirdly, we had the occasion to develop more valued friendships. Not only were we fortunate to interact with the team executives, like you, the coaches and the players, we made relational bonds with the parents of the players, the local pastors and members of the churches, and various local citizens of the city. Our purpose in life is to love God, love others and share God’s love, so being in this environment fulfilled this aim, but we received so much more love in return. How could we not be overwhelmed by God’s goodness during our time in Spain!
En tercer lugar, tuvimos la ocasión de desarrollar amistades de mucho valor. No sólo tuvimos la suerte de interactuar con los ejecutivos del equipo, como ustedes, los entrenadores y los jugadores, hicimos lazos relacionales con los padres de los jugadores, los pastores locales y los miembros de las iglesias, y varios ciudadanos locales de la ciudad. Nuestro propósito en la vida es amar a Dios, amar a los demás y compartir el amor de Dios, por lo que estar en este ambiente cumplió este objetivo, pero recibimos mucho más amor a cambio. ¡Cómo no sentirnos abrumados por la bondad de Dios durante nuestro tiempo en España!
So, in closing, if I can be of assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to let me know. We are praying that our world can recover from this crisis, including safety for you and your families. We know many people are hurting and many are grieving from loss of loved ones. Again, we appreciated the opportunity to serve you!
